Foster a Shelter Dog – Change a Life

Why Foster a Shelter Dog?
Frequently Asked Fostering Questions
Fostering a dog from our shelter is easy! Here are some Frequently Asked Questions to help you learn what to expect.
What Does It Take to Be a Foster Parent?
We ask that our foster families provide a safe, secure, and loving home for their foster dog. Foster dogs should live indoors, with outdoor access for play and exercise. Many of these dogs are decompressing after the stress of shelter life, so they need someone patient, kind, and understanding to help them adjust and feel safe.
Foster parents should also be able to transport their foster dog to veterinary appointments at the Henry County Animal Clinic in New Castle, Ky when needed. Some dogs may still require spaying or neutering, or need vaccinations, depending on their intake situation.
Whenever possible, we encourage foster families to bring their dogs to adoption events. Meeting potential adopters in person significantly increases each dog’s chances of finding a forever home.
What Does the Shelter Provide for My Foster Dog?
We’ve got you covered! As a foster, you won’t be on your own—we provide everything your foster dog needs to get off to a great start.
All medical care is fully covered through the Henry County Animal Clinic, our trusted veterinary partner. To ensure we can manage costs and care, we ask that foster dogs only be taken to this clinic, where we have an account set up.
We’ll also supply a collar and leash—or a harness, if you prefer. Food is available for pickup at the shelter, but you’re welcome to provide your own if that works better for you. And if your foster pup needs a crate, toys, or other supplies, just let us know—we’ll do our best to provide those too.
Your support helps save lives, and we’re here to support you every step of the way!
Do I Have to Live in Henry or Trimble County to Foster?
Not necessarily! While we’re based in Henry and Trimble Counties, you don’t have to live here to become a foster. We welcome all loving foster homes and consider each out-of-area application on a case-by-case basis.
The most important thing is that you are able and willing to transport your foster dog to the Henry County Animal Clinic for vet care and attend some of our local adoption events. If that works for you, we’d love to have you on our foster team—no matter your zip code! Contact us to inquire about your specific location.
What if I Have Pets or Kids?
That’s totally fine—in fact, we love it! Having foster dogs in homes with other pets or children helps us learn how they interact in real-life family settings. The more we know about a dog’s personality and behavior, the better we can match them with their perfect forever home.
To make sure it’s a good fit for everyone, we just ask that you bring your whole crew—both human and canine—for a meet-and-greet at the shelter before taking a foster dog home.
Your home could be the perfect place for a dog to learn, grow, and thrive while they wait for their forever family!
What if I Fall in Love with My Foster and Want to Adopt?
It happens all the time—and we totally understand! If you find yourself head over heels for your foster dog and can’t imagine life without them, we’re here to help make it official.
Just reach out to the shelter, complete the adoption paperwork, and your foster pup becomes a forever member of your family. We love when a foster story turns into a forever home—it’s a win for everyone, especially the dog! 🐾❤️
Count Me In! What's Next?
That’s amazing—we’re so excited to have you join our foster family!
If you meet the requirements and are ready to make a difference in a dog’s life, your first step is to fill out a Foster Application Form and sign our Foster Agreement. You can email it to us or bring it with you when you come to the shelter to meet your potential foster pup.
Almost all of our adoptable dogs are eligible for fostering, so take a look at our current listings and see who catches your eye. Once you’ve chosen your foster dog, we’ll provide everything you need—supplies, medical info, and guidance tailored to that specific pup.
